Teenagers

Daily writing prompt
What advice would you give to your teenage self?

Actually I have had the opportunity to speak to my teenage self. Several times. I refrained from giving myself advice right off the bat, because as you know, teenagers think they know everything.

So I waited a couple of weeks, then I told me I wanted to talk to me about something very important. To me. I responded exactly the way I thought I would; I told myself to mind my own business. That I shouldn’t tell myself what to do; after all, I’m not the boss of me!

I told myself to shut up and listen. To me. Just listen, then do whatever I want. So I said okay, that I would give myself a chance. Then I told myself the following:

You’re gonna do everything right. You’re not gonna want to change a thing. You’re gonna get married and have wonderful, responsible, loving children who in turn are gonna marry other terrific people and give you five wonderful, funny, loving grandchildren (so far). Everything is gonna be great.

I looked up at me after I said it, and responded, “Don’t try to run my life. I’ll do whatever I want!”

Well, I tried. But sometimes you just can’t talk to teenagers.
